Getting a wisdom tooth can often cause discomfort and questions. While some experience little inconvenience from it, others face pain, swelling and other complications. So when is the best time to contact your dentist?
What are wisdom teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the last molars to come through at the very back of your mouth. This usually happens in your late teens or adulthood. In some people, these molars don't even break through at all.
If your wisdom teeth don't have enough space, they may only partially erupt, if at all. The gums around your wisdom teeth are very susceptible to inflammation and infection. You may experience throbbing pain and your gums will look red and swollen.
Because they have too little space, your wisdom teeth can also warp or damage your surrounding molars.
Getting wisdom teeth pulled
Do you have persistent pain symptoms or do your gums become frequently inflamed? Then it is best to call your dentist. In these cases, it is often better to have your wisdom teeth extracted.
Contrary to what many people think, wisdom teeth do not always need to be removed. If you have enough space in your mouth and your wisdom teeth can erupt without any problems, they may simply stay in place.
